A Product Manager (PM) owns the 'why' and 'what' of a product — deciding what gets built, prioritising a roadmap, and being accountable for whether it succeeds. A Business Analyst (BA) focuses more on the 'how' — gathering detailed requirements, documenting processes, and ensuring a solution is correctly specified and analysed, often for a defined project rather than an ongoing product. PMs typically have broader, more strategic accountability; BAs typically have deeper, more precise documentation and analysis responsibility. Many people move from BA into PM roles as their career progresses.
Think of a PM as accountable for a product's overall direction and success — they decide priorities and own outcomes. A BA is accountable for making sure a specific requirement, process or solution is correctly understood, documented and analysed — often within a project a PM (or a business stakeholder) has already prioritised. In smaller companies, one person sometimes does both; in larger organisations, the roles are distinct and often work closely together.
